The first appointment as an academic library director can be fraught with unexpected challenges, even if you are mentally prepared for that opportunity and have moved up as planned through the organizational structure. When the appointment is unexpected and sudden, the move can be much more complicated. This article discusses how to draw on a wide variety of previous professional experiences, sharpen communication skills, and incorporate emotional intelligence during and following that transitional time to ease the path to effective leadership. The experience of being an “accidental director” will become part of a valuable tool kit regardless of your ultimate career path.Downloads
